Building Community Through Genuine Connections This July

A child’s excitement when a LEGO robot begins moving. Parents taking a moment to enjoy an activity together. A volunteer discovering that STEM learning can inspire people of all ages. These small moments were part of a larger story throughout July: the power of genuine connections in building a stronger community. 

Over the past month, VRES connected with families, volunteers, community partners, and local residents through educational programs, outreach initiatives, and community events. While each event looked different, they all reflected our commitment to creating opportunities for people to learn and connect.

At the Chiquitzin Fiesta, VRES brought LEGO Robotics and LEGO Arts activities into the community, sparking children’s curiosity in STEM through hands-on, creative learning. The booth quickly became the most popular stop for families, with many children excited to participate and parents taking time to learn more about our programs. 

One moment that stood out was a family who visited with their daughters. The children were eager to participate in the LEGO activities, and with support from our team, they were able to explore different builds while their parents were able to take a closer look at what VRES offers. After seeing how engaged their children were, the parents were invited to try building themselves. They shared not having had much time for themselves recently and that the experience felt almost like a small date together. It was a simple moment, but it showed how community programs can create meaningful experiences for entire families.

This event also highlighted the importance of making our programs welcoming for everyone. Another team member shared an experience involving two brothers with limited English proficiency who joined a LEGO Robotics activity. When verbal instructions became challenging, the team adapted through demonstrations, gestures, and hands-on guidance. Watching the children’s excitement as their robot began moving showed how curiosity and creativity can connect people even across language barriers.

Beyond community events, July was also an opportunity to strengthen the people and partnerships behind VRES programs. The VRES Volunteer Networking Event brought together volunteers from all stages of their educational journeys to connect, learn about upcoming opportunities, and share their experiences. From high-school students interested in teaching assistant roles to undergraduate and graduate students exploring ways to contribute, the event highlighted how community involvement can bring together people with different backgrounds and goals.

Another memorable moment from the event was when two young professionals, initially looking for virtual volunteer opportunities in areas like research and data analysis, tried LEGO robotics and found themselves genuinely engaged by the activity. It was a reminder that hands-on learning can inspire people across different ages and experiences. Community care also extends beyond education.

During a local litter cleanup, VRES volunteers worked together to care for shared public spaces by collecting waste. A passing cyclist’s simple nod and “thank you” was a small but meaningful reminder that the community's efforts are noticed and valued. Through initiatives like these, volunteers have the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the neighbourhoods they are part of.

Although these moments happened across different events, they all reflected the same belief: Communities grow stronger when people have opportunities to learn, support each other, and build authentic relationships. This July, VRES was grateful to be part of those connections, and we look forward to continuing this work within the community in August.
