Building Connections Before Camp

As soon as families arrived at our Camp Open House, children made a beeline for the LEGO Arts and Robotics activities, eager to build, experiment, and let their imagination run free. It didn't take long for the room to come alive.

Some carefully planned each LEGO block, while others jumped right in, testing different strategies and pushing the limits of what the robots could do. There were smiles, laughter, moments of concentration, and plenty of excitement as campers discovered just how much fun learning can be. Meanwhile, parents were just as engaged.

As children explored, families toured our learning space, met our team, and learned more about what a summer at VRES looks like. What stood out most, however, wasn't introducing our camp, but instead the conversations we shared.

Parents spoke about their children's interests, strengths, and the supports that help their children thrive as they go through life. They asked thoughtful questions about our programs and shared what they hope their children will gain from camp. Together, we discussed how today's world is ever-changing through technology, and how educational experiences can help children develop the creativity, confidence, and problem-solving skills they'll carry with them long after summer ends.

Many parents were especially excited about our approach to structured, hands-on learning. They appreciated that our activities encourage children to explore, experiment, and think critically while being guided by caring instructors who keep them engaged every step of the way. Whether children are working through a robotics challenge or collaborating on a new project, they're developing resilience and confidence through play. For us, these conversations are one of the most meaningful parts of hosting an open house.

Every child is unique, and every family brings valuable insight into how their child learns best. Taking the time to listen before camp begins helps us create a more inclusive and supportive experience for everyone. It also helps build trust, giving families confidence that their children will be welcomed, understood, and encouraged from the moment they walk through our doors.

One of the most heartwarming parts of the day was seeing how enthusiastic families were about our mission.

Many shared how much they valued the work that non-profits like VRES do to provide accessible educational opportunities. They even offered to help spread the word within their own communities.

It was a wonderful reminder that building strong programs also means building strong relationships with the families we serve.

As summer camp approaches, we're feeling grateful for every conversation, every question, and every new connection that was made during our Camp Open House. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the afternoon such a success! We can't wait to welcome our campers this summer for a season filled with curiosity, creativity, and discovery.
