Why the “A” in STEAM Matters

When people think of STEAM education, they often focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These subjects are important for helping children understand how the world works and develop problem-solving skills. However, the arts also play a key role in how children learn and engage with new ideas. At VRES, we see the “A” in STEAM as an essential part of learning. We practice this through our LEGO Arts programs. The arts are not separate from STEM subjects, but instead help support and strengthen them by encouraging creativity and exploration. 


Art gives children opportunities to think in different ways. Through drawing, designing, building, and storytelling, students can explore ideas more freely and approach challenges with a broader mindset. This kind of learning encourages curiosity and helps children understand that there is often more than one way to solve a problem.


In STEAM activities, creativity and logical thinking work together. Whether students are building LEGO models, programming robots, or working through a design challenge, they are constantly making decisions that involve both imagination and reasoning. The arts help students visualize their ideas and make connections between abstract concepts and real-world applications.  


Creative, hands-on learning also supports critical thinking and problem-solving. Many artistic processes involve planning, testing, adjusting, and improving. This is similar to how students learn in STEM activities, where they are encouraged to try ideas, reflect, and make changes. When the arts are included, students can engage in this process more openly and flexibly. The arts also help students communicate their ideas. Not every idea can be easily explained through numbers or technical language. Through visual design, storytelling, and creative expression, students can share their thinking in clear, accessible ways. This also supports collaboration, as students learn to understand and build on each other’s ideas.


Beyond academic skills, STEAM learning supports cognitive and social development. Creative activities help improve focus, attention to detail, and memory. They also encourage curiosity and allow students to explore ideas more naturally and interactively. At the same time, creative work can support confidence and help students feel more comfortable expressing themselves. At VRES, we see this in our programs and camps every day. Students are constantly blending creativity with technical learning, whether they are designing LEGO creations, working on robotics projects, or taking part in interactive activities. These experiences help them stay engaged while building both creative and analytical skills.


While STEAM learning is not about technology alone, the idea reflects the importance of combining creativity with technical skills. By including the arts in STEM learning, students develop a more complete set of skills. They learn how to solve problems, but also how to imagine new ideas, communicate clearly, and approach challenges with creativity and confidence.


The “A” in STEAM is what turns understanding into expression. It’s where ideas become something students can see, build, and share as they learn.
