Building Connections Through Volunteering

Volunteering creates opportunities for people to connect with their communities, develop new skills, and contribute to causes they care about. Whether someone is looking to gain experience, meet new people, explore career interests, or simply give back, volunteerism offers meaningful ways to make a positive impact while growing personally and professionally.

At VRES, we recently had the opportunity to witness this firsthand through our Volunteer Fair, which brought together community members and nonprofit organizations for an afternoon of learning, networking, and connection. The event welcomed approximately 40 attendees and featured eight nonprofit organizations, including Volunteer Corner, Big Sisters BC Lower Mainland, Moving Forward Family Services, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Community Leadership Initiative (CLI), The Loose Leaf, Repeat Floral, and Watermelon Foundation. Each organization shared information about its mission, community programs, and volunteer opportunities, allowing attendees to explore a wide range of ways to get involved.

Throughout the event, attendees had the chance to speak directly with organization representatives, ask questions, and learn about causes that aligned with their interests and goals. The atmosphere was energetic and welcoming, with meaningful conversations taking place at every booth. To encourage engagement, participants completed punch cards as they visited different organizations, creating opportunities to connect with every NPO represented at the fair. One of the most encouraging aspects of the event was the genuine enthusiasm shown by attendees. Many were eager to learn how volunteering could help them gain new experiences, build professional skills, and become more involved in their communities. Others were interested in meeting like-minded individuals and supporting causes that were meaningful to them.

These conversations highlighted one of the greatest benefits of volunteering: the opportunity to learn through real-world experiences. Volunteer roles often help individuals strengthen communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills while working alongside others who share similar values and interests. At the same time, volunteers contribute their time and talents to organizations that create positive change within their communities.

We observed strong interest when members of the VRES team attended a volunteer fair hosted by Options Community Services in Surrey. There, we connected with approximately 100 attendees from diverse cultural, educational, and professional backgrounds. Many newcomers to Canada expressed interest in volunteering as a way to build local connections, gain Canadian experience, and become more engaged in their communities. We also met recent graduates looking for opportunities to develop practical skills and gain experience related to their fields of study.

These conversations reflected the many different reasons people choose to volunteer. For some, volunteering serves as a pathway toward future educational or career opportunities. For others, it provides a chance to expand their networks, build confidence, and develop a stronger sense of belonging. Regardless of their motivation, many volunteers discover that the experience offers benefits that extend far beyond what they initially expected. At VRES, we see this regularly through the volunteers who support our educational programs, camps, and community initiatives. Volunteers often work directly with children and youth, gaining valuable experience while helping create positive learning environments. Through these experiences, they develop patience, adaptability, empathy, and leadership skills while building meaningful relationships with participants, staff, and fellow volunteers.

Many volunteers join hoping to make a difference in the lives of others, but often find that they learn just as much themselves. Working with children encourages creativity, communication, and understanding, while offering valuable lessons about resilience, curiosity, and human connection. These experiences help volunteers develop skills and perspectives that continue to benefit them long after their volunteer service has ended. The success of both volunteer fairs serves as a reminder that people are eager to contribute to their communities when opportunities are available. Volunteerism not only supports the important work of nonprofit organizations but also helps individuals develop skills, build relationships, and become more engaged members of their communities.

At VRES, we are grateful to everyone who attended our Volunteer Fair, the organizations that partnered with us, and the community members we connected with at the Options Community Services Volunteer Fair. We look forward to continuing to create opportunities for people to learn, connect, and make a positive impact through volunteerism.
